Optimising OCULA On TRON: LEGACY

We worked closely with DD to optimise the performance of OCULA for Disney’s TRON: Legacy.

The Foundry worked closely with Academy Award®-winning digital studio Digital Domain to develop software solutions specifically for production on Disney’s TRON: Legacy.

TRON: Legacy was conceived as a stereoscopic 3D movie from its earliest stages, which provides an immersive audience experience but poses significant production challenges. In order to fix polarization issues found in the photographic plates, Digital Domain employed The Foundry’s ColourMatcher, an OCULA plug-in for NUKE, which turned out to be immensely helpful in creating stunning visuals for this groundbreaking film.

Paul Lambert, compositing supervisor at Digital Domain, said,

“The Foundry’s ColourMatcher proved to be a tremendous asset to our team, even though it had never been used to this extent on a stereo 3D film, The Foundry was a great partner in developing ColourMatcher to do exactly what we needed.”

“We are always keen to take on a challenge for a customer,” added Simon Robinson, co-founder and Chief Scientist at The Foundry, “so our research team rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in to find a reliable solution. Digital Domain was so pleased with the results that an alpha build was implemented in their pipeline and rolled out to the other visual effects studios working on TRON: Legacy. That alpha is now a released product – OCULA 2.1.”

“We worked closely with The Foundry to optimise the performance of OCULA for ‘TRON: LEGACY’ and its addition to the already robust 3D capabilities of NUKE leaves no doubt that The Foundry’s tools are the industry’s best compositing solution.”
